Tuesday March 16, Bemba Soul Tribe and Wax Poetics present World Groove at Momo’s, with performances by Chico Mann, Ocote Soul Sound System, Ancient Astronauts, DJs Pleasuremaker & Señor Oz with John Speice, DJ Chorizo Funk, and Austin Piazzolla Quintet.

World Groove is a collaboration between three of Austin’s hottest promoters; Brandon Badillo of Bemba Entertainment, Scott Romero of Soul of the Boot Entertainment and Jeff Strange of StrangeTribe Productions. Together they form a music production powerhouse called Bemba Soul Tribe. Their inaugural music showcase will debut on March 16th during SXSW. World Groove expands on Badillo’s established weekly World Music Night Series at the legendary live music club, Momo’s. The intentions of Bemba Soul Tribe is to create a monolithic showcase that will rock Austin collectively and plant a seed that will inevitably spout and flourish into one of Austin’s most dynamic music production partnerships.

The show begins at 8:30 p.m. and goes until 2 a.m. at Momo’s, located at 618 W 6th St. There is a $5 cover from 8:30-9:30 and $10 after 9:30 for 21 and older, for everyone under 21 the cover is $15. This event will feature Maker’s Mark drink specials all night, guest appearances and giveaways!

In 2007, the members of respected Austin, Texas funk/jazz outfit Gnappy began tinkering with an experimental side project called FLYJACK. The original idea was to take the old-school funk that had been sampled by hip-hoppers and DJs throughout the 90’s and 2000’s, and forge a band that would play it live. The challenge was simple. While millions of people might know the drum break from “It’s a New Day” by the Skull Snaps because it was sampled by The Prodigy (in “Poison”) and Ol’ Dirty Bastard (In “'Hippa To Da Hoppa'”), how many had heard the original song, or for that matter, heard it live? Better yet, how many knew that the original was better – much better?

FLYJACK quickly became an obsession for founding members Buck McKinney (guitar, vocals), Marcus Cardwell (sax) and Brad Bradburn (bass, vocals), who amassed a collection of rare grooves by scores of little-known groups that had long since faded from popular memory. The more they collected, the more the project expanded - becoming less about hip hop history, and more about the source music itself. FLYJACK was particularly fascinated by the gritty, deep funk created by bands on the outer fringes of popular music – groups like Black Heat, The Soul Seven, The Young Senators, Rhythm Machine and African Music Machine. In fact, the more unsung, the better. In short: the rawest of the raw.

On the Scene: In the summer of 2007 - only weeks after solidifying a line up - FLYJACK took up a weekly residency at legendary East Austin chitlin’ circuit holdover TC’s Lounge, and dug-in. Adding Berklee College of Music graduate Erik Telford on trumpet, Baylor vocal major Alex Felan on vocals and keys, Central Texan Tom Hays on trombone, and Austinite Ed Miles on drums - the group rapidly developed a heavyweight reputation. Wednesdays at TC’s Lounge became a sweaty affair, punctuated by muscular drum breaks, stabbing horns, and a regular group of dancers who nearly stomped the old wooden floor into sawdust. Before long, the word was out, and FLYJACK received an auspicious invitation. In March, 2008, Austin’s legendary Antone’s – “Home of the Blues” – invited FLYJACK to move its residency downtown. The following month, FLYJACK instituted Super Soul Mondays at Antone’s – a weekly funk and soul revue featuring DJs, regular guest acts, and of course, FLYJACK. The night has since become a hub of activity for the nascent soul revival in Austin - attracting a diverse mix of musicians, college kids, tastemaking hipsters and old school fans, while dramatically expanding the opportunity for growth of the Austin funk and soul scene.

Most recently, FLYJACK has been invited to perform at the prestigious 2008 Jazz Aspen Snowmass Festival with Widespread Panic and the New Mastersounds. The group has also shared the stage with DJ Numark (of Jurassic 5) ; instituted a semi-regular boogaloo extravaganza called “Superfly Soul Party” at Austin’s oldest African-American venue, Victory Grill; and performs a monthly soul-jazz set at Austin’s venerable jazz club the Elephant Room.

In the Studio: Of course, for all of its reverence for funk history, FLYJACK always intended to develop its own repertoire. But the group realized it needed to do its homework first. As an exercise, they purposely refrained from writing original material for nearly six months, allowing their instincts to develop and grow. Then, with the force of a breaking dam, the songs began to flow – tight instrumentals such as “Pick Pocket,” “Get Up to Get Down,” “Flyjack Hustler,” and “Weird Harold”, and stone-cold vocal workouts like “Soul Fire,” “Motherload,” “Too Heavy,” and “Serious.” Naturally, the group was tempted to record the songs right away, but here again, they took a studied approach. Rather than rushing in to record their own material, they decided to learn how to make old-school records first.

In April, 2008, FLYJACK entered Austin’s Lava Studios to record a collection of six ultra-obscure funk/soul compositions, including African Music Machine’s “Black Water Gold” and Sir Joe Quarterman’s “So Much Trouble”. Although tracked and mixed in only two days, the band worked hard to recreate the vibe and sound of the late 60’s and early 70’s. The result is a collection of recordings so raw, so heavy, that they sound as if they were pulled-out of a time capsule. Within weeks of release, FLYJACK’s EP made significant waves in the global funk scene – becoming a feature on the popular and influential Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show on BBC Radio in the UK, and gaining traction at Triple-A and Non-Com radio in the U.S. With these accomplishments under its belt, the band enters the studio this fall to begin production of their first full-length record, due for release on respected indie-groove label Hammondbeat Records in early 2009 (www.hammondbeat.com).

It has been a dizzy ride for FLYJACK in the one year since they played their first note - from TC’s Lounge to Antone’s to the Aspen Jazz Festival and beyond; from their crash course in old school rare groove to the development of a dynamite repertoire of original music that may establish FLYJACK as one of the most important funk bands to emerge from Austin in recent years.

dubSpot Debuts Charitable Mix CD Series with Funk Aid for Africa
First Release Benefits Humanitarian Organization NextAid

dubSpot, New York City’s one-of-a-kind electronic music production and DJ training institute, has undertaken its first nationwide philanthropic project with a series of charitable mix CDs. The first, Funk Aid for Africa, will benefit Los Angeles-based humanitarian organization, NextAid. An inspired collage of funk, soul, and Latin tunes created by DJ OBaH, Funk Aid for Africa features songs by twenty different artists including Ticklah, Ursula Rucker, King Britt, Chico Mann, The Lions, & Ocote Soul Sounds. This series of dubSpot-produced benefit compilations will raise funds for various projects by harnessing the positive power of music. The goal for this compilation is to raise awareness and much needed funds for African children orphaned by the AIDS crisis. BFM Digital, Inc. is on board to digitally distribute the release globally.

The nationwide release party is scheduled for May 7, 2009 at the Elbo Room in San Francisco (647 Valencia St., SF, CA 94110) featuring J Boogie, DJ OBaH, Happy Mayfield (live), and the Pleasuremaker Band. Dan Giove, the founder of dubSpot, has always believed that education is fundamentally steeped in the ethics of altruism and selflessness. Much of the musical community shares in this feeling; it’s just not about the individual. It is in this spirit that all of the musicians involved with the Funk Aid mix have generously donated their art and their time in deference to a greater cause. Most important, 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this compilation are going directly to charity. These funds will aid in the construction a ‘green’ environment, including a playground and nursery school, for the children of Youth with a Vision (YWAV), a South African organization that runs AIDS prevention programs in Dennilton, South Africa. These facilities are part of NextAid’s and YWAV’s 20 structure children’s village that will house 30 children orphaned by AIDS, an after-school center for hundreds of children living off site, and an economic hub for the surrounding community.

Funk Aid has been incredibly well received by the musical community, both for its motives and its quality. Gunnar Hissam of Om Records says that “Funk Aid for Africa is everything a good mix CD should be, funky, uplifting and for the children. Props go out to all the musicians for donating the amazing music and for dubSpot and NextAid for making it all happen. God bless you!”

The May 7th event will mark the first leg of an 8-city DubSpot tour. The ‘Ableton Live 8 U.S. Sessions Tour,’ is a series of weekend workshops designed to showcase the best of what dubSpot’s school has to offer. With multiple sections planned each day, these presentations will feature dubSpot instructors and nationally renowned artists alike. This morning, Michelle and I awoke to some surprising and humbling news. At 6 a.m., we received word that I'd been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009.

To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who've been honored by this prize -- men and women who've inspired me and inspired the entire world through their courageous pursuit of peace.

But I also know that throughout history the Nobel Peace Prize has not just been used to honor specific achievement; it's also been used as a means to give momentum to a set of causes.

That is why I've said that I will accept this award as a call to action, a call for all nations and all peoples to confront the common challenges of the 21st century. These challenges won't all be met during my presidency, or even my lifetime. But I know these challenges can be met so long as it's recognized that they will not be met by one person or one nation alone.

This award -- and the call to action that comes with it -- does not belong simply to me or my administration; it belongs to all people around the world who have fought for justice and for peace. And most of all, it belongs to you, the men and women of America, who have dared to hope and have worked so hard to make our world a little better.

So today we humbly recommit to the important work that we've begun together. I'm grateful that you've stood with me thus far, and I'm honored to continue our vital work in the years to come.

Today is a very significant time my family's life. Four short years ago, Hurricane Katrina brought its destruction to the Gulf Coast and most personally to New Orleans. I can honestly say that the city of New Orleans harvested my self identity during my short 3 year resisdence. I was "born again" during my time in New Orleans, not in a religious way, but in a spiritual way! I found my spirit through the music and culture of the Crescent City. The people of New Orleans carry a pride that you cannot purchase, you cannot mock, you cannot deny! The city's energy is undeniable! I tingle as I type these words to share!

Take minute to remember all our brothers and sisters lost in Hurricane Katrina. Its been along four years for the city of NOLA. Get back there a feel the resurrection of most musical city in the world.

Since forming in 2008, Bad Chad and The Good Girls, a crunk pop trio based in southern Louisiana, have merged 808 bass, playful lyrics, and electronic production into an inventive frenzy of dance tracks! Their uncompromising and intense delivery contains innovative elements and fuses different genres. The trio create an atmosphere reminiscent of an avant garde art project blended with punk rock energy and southern swang. This is the type of band that just likes to have fun, and is careful not to fall into any specific label or scene. Good plain fun. Or in Chad's case, bad plain fun. We are currently working on our new logo. I will be posting the new logo for feedback on the final direction of the branding of my company.

We are putting the finishing touches on the 1st Bad Chad & The Good Girls LP due out Spring 2009. The album will be released under Soul of the Boot Entertainment, LLC. This will be a groundbreaking release for SOBE and the 1st of its kind. We could use some much needed "BUZZ" so if your diggin the sounds of this project, please go crazy with spreading the word.

We are formulating album of explosive cajun fused remixes done by Bad Chad himself. The samples are courtesy of Louie Michot from Lost Bayou Ramblers. "Down By the Bayou" set the standard for Chad's cajun remixes by using a Lost Bayou Ramblers track and creating an offbeat classic that will soon revolutionize the modern Cajun Movement.

CELEBRATION OF WIRED LOUISIANA HYPNO-FUNK SENSATION imagineIAM
The Hand On The Plow crew – Laszlo Beckett, Steve Taylor and Matt Spandex – have
always been free and easy with the sounds and styles they adopt into their tracks, but this has
never meant that they are self-conscious “fusion” merchants. Where blues and Afro-funk
motifs, Dada lyrics, Liquid Liquid percussive work-outs or Herbert-style domestic objectsampling
appear, they are never clever references or nods to currently-hip styles: they are
there because they work in the track and only because of that. Theirs is "experimental" music
only in that they experiment constantly in search of the perfect groove, the sort of groove that
can only come from years of immersion in the truest of true-school house and techno and a
fearsome dedication to originality.
For them to sign an artist from outside their circle to the HOTP label, then, it'd have to be
someone quite amazingly secure in their own distinctive musical identity - and artists like that
don't come around all that often. But when, after what felt like millennia of MySpaz trawling,
they happened upon imagineIAM from Lafayette, Louisiana, there was an instant spark, a
recognition of someone else who could bend diverse sounds into new shapes by sheer force
of will and an entirely singular vision, and just as importantly, a recognition of someone else
with the groove in their bloodstream.
It would be easy to start bracketing imagineIAM together with contemporary acts that he
enjoys like Dirty Projectors, Daedelus and Animal Collective in some kind of nouveaubohemian
movement - and without a doubt, he does share with those bands a kind of secondgeneration
psychedelic appreciation of the possibilities of music to bypass the niceties of dayto-
day communication, creep into the brain and start rewriting the mind's operating system.
But his work is really a different proposition, without a hint of hippie excess: imagineIAM is all
about the leanest, barest, most stripped-down approach, about taking the simplest
components of beat, bass and voice and constructing from them precision-tooled devices for
exploring extreme possibilities of the human spirit. But for all his drive and intensity,
imagineIAM has a grin on his face as he does this. He has fun, and you will too if you let his
beats into your head. Though it comes from a very different approach, his music has evolved
into something that works in the same way as the best electronic dance, irresistibly urging the
body move and making you feel better about everything as it does so.
In his own words: "My music enters this dimension pretty much smack-dab in the the middle
of all music 'styles', since it is so exact in its presence, and it simply comes to me just as
definite as the sun simply shines... I throw in some extras to make it more sassy, crunk,
ridiculous, holy'n'profane, sacred and shut up... with ninja blood sparkling deep electric it
dares and blooms forth beyond the known edge creating a new world celebration...
unconquerablly creative and classy..." And you know what? He's right.
